چکیده

We compare sparse and dense representations of predictive models in macroeconomics, microeconomics, finance. To deal with a large number possible predictors, we specify prior that allows for both variable selection shrinkage. The posterior distribution does not typically concentrate on single model, but wide set often include many predictors.

Economic Predictions with Big Data: the Illusion of Sparsity

We compare sparse and dense representations of predictive models in macroeconomics, microeconomics and finance. To deal with a large number of possible predictors, we specify a prior that allows for both variable selection and shrinkage. The posterior distribution does not typically concentrate on a single sparse or dense model, but on a wide set of models. A clearer pattern of sparsity can onl...

Predictions with Big Data

Big data infrastructure is a solved problem. We know how to collect massive amounts of data (e.g., web scraping, social media, mobile phones), how to store it efficiently to enable queries at scale (e.g., Hadoop File System, Cassandra) and how to perform computation at scale with it (e.g., Hadoop, MapReduce). And yes, we can visualize it, too (e.g., New York Times visualizations). However, we a...

Sparsity-Based Estimation of a Panel Quantile Count Data Model with Applications to Big Data∗

In this paper we introduce a panel quantile estimator for count data with individual heterogeneity, by constructing continuous variables whose conditional quantiles have a one-to-one relationship with the conditional count response variable. The new method is needed as a result of the increased availability of Big Data, which allows us to track event counts at the individual level for a large n...

Measuring Economic Activities of China with Mobile Big Data

Emerging trends in smartphones, online maps, social media, and the resulting geo-located data, provide opportunities to collect traces of people’s socio-economical activities in a much more granular and direct fashion, triggering a revolution in empirical research. These vast mobile data offer new perspectives and approaches for measurements of economic dynamics and are broadening the research ...
